Segben Changelings
In the second issue of the comicbook, Baylans: Hack the Culture, the lead character, Jonas Arcanghel, will encounter a changeling, called a Segben. In modern Visayan vocabulary, the word "segben" refers to a kangaroo. In local folklore, however, it refers to a dark mammalian beast whose form varies from one story to another. In most cases, the segben is a large dark goat. Maximo D. Ramos, in his book The Creatures of Midnight, describes the Segben:
Visayans know it by the name of segben.
It is a ghoul if it steals corpses.
It disguises itself as a tiny locust.
It disguises itself as a long-legged frog, too.
It clings to the wall to see if the patient is dead.
It can't be caught because it jumps off quickly.
It has a sickening smell.
It disguises itself as a goat.
It has big ears that flap as it walks.
Its hips are higher than its shoulders when it walks.
It jumps quietly into people's backyards.
It pretends to eat grass there.
But it came to listen for sounds of death.
It hastens death by biting the patient's shadow.
It fears the smell of heavy smoke.
It fears spices and the clash of knives.
During my childhood in Davao City, there were stories of a Segben creature in gigantic canine form roaming around a suburban village. In certain cases, a segben may refer to a superhuman. A former college classmate of mine had a household helper whose former employer was a family of Segben changelings who required her to stay locked up in her room at night. Another friend has a cousin in Southern Mindanao who saw his neighbor fall from the sky.
Segben Transformation
In Baylans: Hack the Culture, the transformation from human form to Segben is initiated by the ingestion of a stone-like object. I took this concept from reports on rumored changelings delivered by the weekly show, Magandang Gabi Bayan (MGB). In MGB, the interviewees describe that the power of transformation is passed from one changeling to another by the ingestion of a special object either by choice or by force, after its former owner's life gets threatened. If this object fails to find a human host, it explodes into a ball of fire. The show failed to describe this object in detail. Another section in Weirdsville Philippines discusses the nature of these mysterious objects, the Mutya.
