Kahilwayan, the Ancient Kingdom

The belief in an ancient powerful kingdom from which all races sprang forth is common across all ancient cultures. The most popular of such kingdoms is perhaps Atlantis. A myth popularized by Plato, the story of Atlantis resembles very much like the tale of the Tower of Babel, a utopic kingdom destroyed by divine wrath because of pride.

In Baylans: Hack the Culture, the ancient ante-diluvian Filipino nation is called Kahilwayan, whose name is taken from Visayan creation myths. Kahilwayan is the garden from which the Visayan cheiftain deities, Maguay and Malaon, created the first man and woman out of a bamboo stalk. In ancient Visayan myth, Kahilwayan is also the place where humans and gods interact.

The Deluge
Another myth story common among cultures are deluge stories, where a great civilization is destroyed by divine wrath. The Jews and Christians have the story of Noah and the Ark. Ancient Asia has the story of Lemuria. For the Bontok tribe, there is the story of the giant crab, Gaki, who flooded the earth by plugging a hole from the abyss. For the Ifugaos, Kabunian's son flooded the earth to catch some animals. There are many other deluge stories in Philippine myths. The element of water is strong in mythical imagination because it is a symbol of cleansing and starting anew.

The Perseverance of Genetic Memory
In the first issue of Baylans: Hack the Culture, the lead character, Jonas Arcanghel, discovers Kahilwayan by "accessing" hidden memory as opened by a copperplate artifact. Much has been left unexplained in the comicbook as to how Jonas was able to achieve such. A longer version of the story would explain that Jonas learned of Kahilwayan by programming his computer to mathematically decode inscriptions in the copperplate. The inscriptions in the copperplate is a version of the Kavi script, which existed before the more popular ancient Filipino script, Alibata. Using biofeedback and electrical stimulation, Jonas' system interprets symbols found in the copperplate as electrical sensations that trigger previously unused areas in the brain. Although this method of memory recall is still unproven to be effective in neuro-physiological physics, there are theories that can support this method. At the same time, psycho-geneticist would accept the theory of genetic memory, where traces of memory get passed from ancestor to descendant. Combining the fields of ancient southeast-asian linguistics, neuro-physiological physics, and psychogenetics, Jonas was able to learn the secret of Kahilwayan, leapfrogging years of archaeological analysis.
